Craig Fellows

I have decided to research into textile designers because I don’t really know many, which I will need to research to inform my work even more. Craig Fellows is the first one that jumped out at me. He is an award-winning textile print designer with a passion for colour and illustration. He likes to combine his fine art talents with his love of fashion and textiles, using traditional, contemporary and digital printing techniques. The beautiful illustrations that he draws are turned into amazing fashion pieces. Each of these are designed and made in locally so that they are all unique and cannot be found on the high street.

Fellows graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Fashion from the University of Northampton in 2008. During his studies he regularly exhibited his work which was chosen to represent the University in various competitions.

He also studies colour by looking at objects and recording what colours he can see.

Short Eared Owl

The short eared owl or asio flammeus is a medium size, with a brown body and pale underneath its wings. The eyes are a bright yellow. Though this particular breed of owl mostly hunts during the day.

. I thought that the yellow eyes in darkness would create the atmosphere I want, or at least help move towards it.

Exploring Ideas…

The idea behind this sketch was to incorporate the skeleton of the owl, which would make it look more creepy. Deathlike.

The first thing I did after my mind map was to explore the form and research a little about it. Get a feel of what it looks like.

So on Wednesday I had a very productive day, as said in my journal. I had a meeting with creative coaching member Alex, who helped me a lot. I have taken her suggestion into account and am currently finishing up my first of the baby steps.

Searching pictures of monsters and I came across this illustrator, whose work consists of some very cute characters and comics. I wont be using this to inform my project but It does open up some ideas for a home project that I have had in mind for a while…hmmm.

Halloween !!

Now days Halloween is just about dressing up and having a party, or going trick or treating in children’s case. It has become less important over the years as its meaning doesn’t hold much anymore. I have always loved halloween and still do, as to me it is all about monsters and all things scary. Things that live in the dark. This is why I wanted to research more into its history…

Halloween is also known as All Hallows Eve. It’s a holiday which is celebrated on October 31st, by dressing up, apple bobbing, bonfires, parties, trick or treating or visiting a haunted house. Just to name a few. The origin of this holiday begins in the celtic festival known a Samhain, which is a celebration of the end of the harvest season. It was a time used to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter, also because they believed that on the 31st of October the boundary between the living and the dead would be overlapped, resulting in the dead coming back and wreaking havoc on the crops. They would dress up in costumes in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. They also made bonfires to attract insect, which in tern attracted bats. The practice of dressing up and begging from door to door goes back to the middle ages. Trick or treating resembles the old practice of ‘souling’, when poor people would go from door to door on November 1st, begging for food in return of prayers.

There are many more aspects of halloween which I hope to look into with more depth…

Nyctophobia…

Nyctophobia is the name for the phobia in which a person fears the dark. Most common in young children, who may not be able to sleep because of ‘the monster under the bed’ or in the closet. As children we have all felt afraid of the dark at some point. I hope to research the possibility of why this may be. What could reside in the darkness?

As we grow up this fear becomes just a nagging thought in the back of our mind, something that never really bothers us much, though for some that is not true. Their fear of monsters and darkness becomes worse as they age, crippling them.

Most people do retain some fear of the dark…maybe this is just an evolutionary of nature as many predators hunt in the night. Also darkness and the monsters which live within it are the main source of horror movies and halloween.

As we all do have some form of Nyctophobia there are symptoms that show. People may act nervous in a darkened environment, even sleeping with a nightlight when they go to bed. I myself have turned the staircase light on at night, not only to see but because of a slight fear of the dark.

Script, Midnight Or Confinement ??

Monday 2nd December 2013, first day of part two. Talked about the plan for the next project, week planners, and also what our brief proposals may be about, to the set words, of which we chose one. I have narrowed it down the three; Script, Midnight and Confinement.

Script…was my original ideal word because it just jumped out at me, not sure why. Usually I would have gone with my gut instinct so I thought about how script could be incorporated into fashion and textiles. Thinking about words on garments but more towards textiles at first. Looking at a narrative, story, to ether use the words in a piece of textiles or to inspire. I would also look at how that could be made into a garment.

For MIDNIGHT, I am really interested in the dark and how people have a irrational fear of it. I thought that what if its not irrational. What if there really were monsters in the dark? Taking the word midnight I would go outside during that time and take pictures using only moonlight or street lights. My focus point would be shadows in the dark and what shapes may emerge from them. For other research I would look into stories of why people are afraid of the dark. The history of the irrational fear and also into monsters, all that is supernatural. Possibly come up with a monster of my own that may inspire a garment or piece of textiles work. Use stitch to make a drawing with stitch book, as extra research and drawings in one.

Confinement! I started to think about how people are confined by clothing initially and this led me to think about mental patients. How they are confined in an environment, what that environment is like. I also thought about how that might make them feel, which could inform a pattern or piece of embroidery. Then I started to think about what they are made to wear, namely straight jackets. How it restricts movement so that they cannot harm anyone of them self. I might look at the history of the jacket, how its made, what of…This could inform some drawings of confined clothing.

So my three words and ideas would all be of the same kind of theme. The dark and mysterious, a little sad. If I would have chose my original idea (which I am not), namely the word SCRIPT then I would have looked at dark fiction stories to inform my work. As I ruled out that Idea, I am kind of stuck with which of the two left I want to go forward with…I feel more passionate about the MIDNIGHT theme as I have been interested in this thought for a while. Also I am very passionate about all thing supernatural, witches, ghosts, vampires, werewolfs etc… Things that reside in the dark.

Though I think looking at CONFINEMENT and mental health patients, what they wear, would be interesting. I have a few ideas of where I could take this, but don’t feel as though my heart is really into that project proposal, so I have gone with midnight.

FASHION DRAWING !!

The next session, after playing around manipulating calico, was drawing. We were shown a easy and quick way of drawing a figure for fashion drawing. This I found was helpful because I could spend most of my time on my designs for my garment. Though I wish I had produced more… I used pictures of buildings that were supplied and also my own which I had copied from library books as inspiration. I plan to use these buildings in my own project at home, to make pattern designs, and a garment.

“IN MEMORY OF ELIZABETH HOWE, SALEM 19692”

The inspiration for this collection is the women who were hung during the salem witch trials, which also led into the exploration of witchcraft in general.

This intrigued me because I have a strong interest in witches, Harry Potter being the love of my life as I grew up, so naturally I’m interested in all things magical and supernatural.
